KUALA LUMPUR, Oct. 29, 2009 (News Agencies) .
Malaysian officials and political leaders are pushing for a global halal standard which would boost the $2 trillion (goods and services) industry. In an interview with Reuters news agency the country’s religious affairs minister Jamil Khir Baharom said that Malaysia can play importat role in the development of the new standard as its own halal certification is widely accepted.
The Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) is also working on a single standard to be applied in its 57 member countries.
Jamil said Muslims generally agree on what is halal although some issues should be left to countries to decide. “In general, we don’t have many differences in terms of products and food.”
