BUKIT MERTAJAM, Feb 5 – The Seberang Perai office of the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry today raided a fish ball processing factory here that used a halal logo not recognised by the Islamic Development Department of Malaysia (Jakim).

Enforcement officer Md Nasir Mohamad said the raiding team seized several packets of fish ball and ordered the factory operator to immediately withdraw all products that used the particular halal logo.

“The operator said he was unaware that he had to apply to Jakim for the recognised halal certificate and logo,” he told reporters.

Md Nasir said the operator was advised to renew the halal logo or the factory was liable to a fine of up to RM200,000.

Bernama learned that the fish ball produced at the factory was much in demand in Penang, particularly in hotels.
