MANILA, Oct.20, 2010 (News Agencies) .

The Philippines government needs to move faster if the country is to cash in on the multi-billion dollar global halal industry, officials here said yesterday.

Sani D. Macabalang, director of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources office in the Central Mindanao region, recommended to Agriculture Secretary Proceso J. Alcala a three-pronged approach for the country to become competitive in the halal market.

Mr. Macabalang, who also heads the department’s Halal Food Industry Development Committee, said in a press statement that there’s a need to harmonize the country’s halal protocols observed by various government agencies, improve halal certification or accreditation, and build up capabilities of halal food inspectors.

“We cannot remain passive and unperturbed by the current malpractices of certain ‘halal-certified’ local processing plants,” Mr. Macabalang said.

In the meanwhile, the Department of Agriculture (DA) is speeding up the development of Halal standards for food commodities in order for the country to tap the flourishing multi-million dollar global market for Halal products
