MB: Muslim NGOs Can Help Check ‘Halal’ Logo Abuse

SHAH ALAM: The Selangor government has urged Muslim non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in the state to help monitor the use of the “halal” logo to stop any abuse of certification.

Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim said the recent controversy about restaurant owners manipulating the “halal” logo was worrying the Muslim community.

“NGOs have members all over the state, hence they can play a role by monitoring the ‘halal’ places to check the real situation with regard to cleanliness and authenticity of the certification,” he told reporters after officiating the 21st annual general meeting of Selangor Perkim here Saturday.

Khalid said the cooperation of various parties was important to protect the sanctity of the Syariah.

“We are afraid the ‘halal’ logo will continue to be misused by irresponsible traders for their business interests,” he said.

Khalid added that the state would call a meeting with the state Islamic Religious department and the Selangor Islamic Religious Council on the reports of such NGOs.

In another development, Khalid said the state had set aside an annual allocation of RM100,000 under the Mentri Besar office for Selangor Perkim to carry out various welfare activities.
