BERA: Business owners are required to display the Islamic Development Department’s (Jakim) ‘halal’ logo at their premises by May 31 this year.

Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced that Jakim was the only body authorised to issue the logo and that logos by other private entities were not recognised.  Â
“The display of the Jakim ‘halal’ logo is effective July 1 and action will be taken under the Domestic Trade Act 2011 against those who do not comply,” he said.     Â
Speaking to reporters after distributing the 1Malaysia People’s Aid to 1,109 residents of Bera parliamentary constituency at the Rakan Muda Kerayong complex here today, he said individuals could be fined RM250,000 or imprisoned for three years or both, whereas companies faced a fine of RM500,000 for contravening the Act.  Â
He further informed that Jakim and the ministry had formed a special committee to monitor the matter and would take stern action against those who failed to comply.Â
“We’re currently visiting business premises and advising them to change their old logos to the new one according to the set guidelines,” he added.
