Malaysia, Perlis Halal Park Expected To Operate Next Year

PADANG BESAR, June 4 (Benama) — The Perlis Halal Industry Park here is expected to start operations before the end of next year with its first phase involving 24 premises comprising small and medium industries (SMIs).

Menteri Besar Perlis Datuk Seri Dr Md Isa Sabu said construction work on the site, covering a total area of 10 hectares, will begin this Friday and is expected to be completed in one year.

Speaking to reporters today following a survey of the project site which is located close to the Malaysia-Thailand border near here, he said RM10 million will be spent on carrying out the first phase.

The first phase will look into facilities for the manufacturing of halal products as well as their packaging while the second phase will be planned with implementation aimed at during the 10th Malaysia Plan. It will involve the construction of larger factories and also the engagement of foreign investors wishing to share the business in the country.

Md Isa hoped that the project will not only create a new growth area along the border area but also drive the economic activities of the locals.

During the first phase, only local companies will be allowed to operate in the area, he said.

With halal products getting recognition worldwide, Padang Besar stands to expand through the project which will bring together the companies producing halal products.

The Chairman of the Perlis State Committee for Investment and Industry, Datuk Seri Diraja Syed Razlan Jamalullail and the General Manager of Perlis State Economic Development Corporation (PKENPs), Zulkifli Ahmad accompanied the Menteri Besar during the site visit.
