The Internet administrative body Icann is against the introduction of the domain extensions .halal and .islam. Some governments had considerable concerns.
The IT company Asia Green IT System (AGIT) from Turkey had applied to Icann for the two new generic Top Level Domains .islam and .halal. Now on 3 October the Internet administration rejected the applications, reports domain-recht.de.
As justification, the administrative body referred to the fact that the majority of the 1.6 billion Muslims as well as some affected governments like Kuwait, Iran and organizations like the “Gulf Cooperation Council” and the “Organization of Islamic Cooperation” had expressed considerable reservations against the introduction of both endings. According to the blog, AGIT now has the opportunity to sue the decision in court. Or to submit a better prepared application with the consent of the Muslim community.
Icann (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) is based in the USA and manages the allocation of Internet addresses.
