GROVELAND, Oct.29, 2010(News Agencies)– .
The growth in the Muslim population in America has generated a parallel rise in the demand for halal meat. Market analysis of major cities in the country show that there is potential for further growth. Capitalising on this demand a number of new ventures including brand new halal slaughterhouses have been initiated in the country this year. But not all of them have faced a smooth ride.
Plans by a family to build one in Lake County, Florida, have reached a dead end when county commissioners denied their request.
The Zafarali family wanted to build the slaughterhouse in a 25-acre property off Soto Road. They wanted a business that would provide meat for the area’s Muslim community.
Neighbors complained that a slaughterhouse would hurt property values and create a bad smell.
The Zafarali family has said the smell would not be a problem.Family members told Channel 13 News that they believe anti-Muslim sentiments may be behind the opposition to their proposed slaughterhouse.
