Thailand, Brunei Plan Halal Ventures

News From : DagangHalal.com (16 Apr 2013)

Thailand, the largest food producer in Southeast Asia, and the Sultanate of Brunei will team up to enter an agricultural  cooperation with a focus on food and halal products, according to Apichart Phetcharatana, Thailand’s ambassador in Brunei.

A memorandum of understanding will be signed shortly and aims to foster ties in the agricultural sector – Brunei could tap the agricultural skills of Thailand and the kingdom could expand cooperation on halal food production, as the products from Brunei are internationally recognised and branded.

The expansion of the halal industry is part of Brunei’s strategy to diversify away from oil and gas as a major source of income. Brunei plans to make sectors such as regional trading, alternative energy, food security, agriculture as well as information technology much stronger than they are now and seeks regional partnerships to achieve this goal.

Thailand sells about 32,000 tonnes of rice a year to Brunei, more than 90 per cent of it being high-quality jasmine rice. It also exports durians and mangoes to the Sultanate.
