Bandar Seri Begawan – Sabah sees avenues for cooperation with Brunei Darussalam in hotel businesses as well as in Halal products.

Dato Awang Buhtamam bin Haji Mahmun, Vice President of Malay Chamber of Commerce of Malaysia (State of Sabah), told the Bulletin that he sees bright prospects in Halal product tagging and the set up of standard procedures in certification with Brunei.

He is one of the Sabah trade delegates currently in the Sultanate on a four-day working visit.

“Brunei is actually spearheading towards the initiative of Halal product tagging. If Brunei and Sabah can have a joint effort to come up with operation standard procedures in giving Halal certification to products or services, it can open up many opportunities,” he said.

“The other aspect that I’ve gathered from the presentation regarding the Halal certification is that about two per cent in China are Muslims, so there is a huge potential there for our Halal products.”

He added that there are opportunities Sabah and Brunei can explore.

“We attended a talk by Brunei Investment Agency (BIA) this morning and we were talking about considering looking into the portfolios of what they are doing right now, possibilities in hotel business and investing in our tourism industry. So, one of the sectors that BIA can consider taking up is equity sharing or investing in a completed project.

“If we look at the number of Bruneians visiting KK, you can see that these sorts of investments are very viable. Foreign companies are investing in, for example, golf courses and resorts. And this actually results in people from the investing countries visiting Sabah.”

Over 41 trade delegates from Sabah, led by Datuk Haji Mohd Arifin bin Mohd Arif, attended a briefing conducted by the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources.
Two officials from the ministry presented the briefing – Hajah Normah Surya Hayati, Director of Agriculture and Agri-Food and Normah Ibrahim from Promotion and Facilitation Service.

Also in attendance were the Minister and Deputy Minister of Industry and Primary Resources, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Yahya bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Haji Bakar and Dato Paduka Haji Hamdillah bin Haji Abdul Wahab.

Apart from briefing the delegates on business and investment, encouragement of investment and investment opportunities in Brunei Darussalam, it also highlighted the implementation of Brunei Halal agenda and the recent Halal certification standards including Brunei Darussalam guidelines for manufacturing and handling of Halal medicine products, traditional medicines and health supplements, standards for Halal food, brand guidelines, Halal certification, audit and compliance, Halal compliance audits and Halal surveillance audit. The delegates also heard about the Brunei Halal brand and the upcoming International Halal Expo (IHPE 2010).
