PETALING JAYA, March 20 (Bernama) — Local meat and poultry products manufacturer, Perusahaan Saudee Sdn Bhd, is optimistic of reaching its goal of eight to 10 per cent growth for the financial year ending May 2010.

The company had to recently recall its “Saudi Gold Potatoes Chips Special (Shoestring)1Kg ” product from the market, due to a misundertanding over the Halal status.

“We have taken several measures to rectify the misunderstanding which caused some confusion among Muslim consumers. It was basically the result of a small typo error on the Halal logo.

“However, we are confident that this mistake will not impact much, our growth for this year.

“We are backed by the 25 years of experience and development gained in this field,” said its Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer, Mohd Ariffin Don on Saturday.

The affected potato chip product contributes about two per cent to the company’s growth.

The company has since recalled the product nationwide. With the assistance of the Islamic Development Department of Malaysia (JAKIM), it expects the replacement process to proceed smoothly and be completed by April.

Mohd Ariffin told Bernama this after meeting the press today to clarify the misunderstanding over the Halal status of the product.

For the financial year-ended 2009, the company had 71 products in the market, registering revenue of RM130 million.

Meanwhile, speaking on the company’s expansion plan, he said Saudee has embarked on an aggressive path to establishing and expanding its presence in the Middle East markets.

“We are planning to set up an office in Dubai as the centre of our business is the Middle East market.

“We are at present in talks with prospective parties from Saudi Arabia and UAE and looking at other markets too,” he explained.

The company has also been exporting its products to Vietnam and Indonesia since last year. Its overseas market contributes about one to two per cent to revenue.

Explaining further, Ariffin said with the expansion, Saudee expects the overseas market to contribute another 10 per cent to revenue in its financial year 2011.
