‘Not Enough Halal Food For Export’

News From : DagangHalal.com (16 Mar 2010)

PASIR PUTEH: Malaysia has not been able to produce enough halal food for export despite strong demand from the Middle East countries, International Trade and Industries Deputy Minister Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir said.

“It is disappointing to note that our local producers cannot even meet the volume for the first consignment,” he told reporters after a meeting with teachers and community leaders at SM Sains Pasir Puteh here yesterday.

“This is where our local producers lose out. Their Thailand rivals are able to meet the huge demand.” he added.

International buyers normally place orders by the container.

Mukriz, who is also Jerlun MP, added that despite carrying a premium halal brand, Malaysia lacked the capacity to produce in volume for export.

He said this had resulted in Thailand taking the lead in halal food production and penetrating the Middle East countries.
