KUALA TERENGGANU, Aug 26 (Bernama) — No ‘kopitiam’ coffee shop in the state had obtained the ‘halal’ certificate from the Terengganu Religious Affairs Department (JHEAT) so far.
JHEAT commissioner Datuk Mohd Rozali Saleh said this was due to the low level of of awareness among kopitiam operators on the importance of obtaining the certificate.
“We can’t force kopitiam operators to apply for the JHEAT halal certificate because this is not compulsory but we hope they will make an effort to obtain the certificate as an improvement in the service provided.
“This is most important because the kopitiam has become a popular resting and eating place for people after work,” he said when met by Bernama here today.
A check by Bernama revealed that most kopitiam shops in the state are always crowded including those operated by non-Muslims.
