KUCHING, Feb 10 (Bernama) — There have been no cases in Sarawak of the use of fake halal certificates that had been bought, instead only four cases of misuse of the word “halal” in business had been detected in the state in the last three years.
Assistant Minister (Islamic Affairs) in the Chief Minister’s Office Datuk Daud Abdul Rahman said among methods used were displaying self-made halal logos or use of government-issued logos when actually the food served was not halal or sold mixed with non-halal food.
“Till now we detected four cases in Sarawak in the last three years and they were compounded,” he told reporters after presenting Tabung Baitulmal Sarawak (TBS) aid amounting to RM79,293 to 64 recipients here today.
Daud, who is also chairman of the Baitulmal and Waqaf Board, said the four cases involved restaurants and a business selling beef and chicken.
Till now there have not been cases of the purchase of fake halal certificates, he said.
Yesterday, the Muslim Consumers Association of Malaysia (PPIM) executive secretary Datuk Nadzim Johan was reported as saying fake halal certificates could be bought for between RM800 and RM1,000 each from two companies producing them.
Daud also told Muslim consumers in the state to be careful on the use of halal logos from outside that were displayed on imported products as some of the products were not certified by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim).
He said some products labeled as halal did not meet the standards set by Jakim and this affected the status of the halal products.
