Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) is organising an incoming buying mission for local halal industry players during the Sixth Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS) 2009.

MIHAS 2009 will be held on May 5 and 6 at the Matrade Exhibition and Convention Centre here.

Matrade deputy chief executive officer Kamarudin Hassan said the response from international companies has been encouraging with 473 foreign buyers from 48 countries having registered to participate in the business matching programme.

In a statement on Thursday, Kamarudin said the buying mission will provide greater opportunities for Malaysian suppliers and exporters of halal products and services to develop business partnerships.

They will also be able to network with importers from all over the world as well as introduce international buyers to Malaysia’s halal industry, he said.

According to him, MIHAS has proven to be an effective platform for Malaysian companies involved in the halal business and trade.

Last year’s buying mission attracted the participation of 545 buyers representing 442 companies from 57 countries.

Countries with the largest number of representatives were China with 65 companies, South Africa with 38, Egypt with 30, the United Kingdom with 22 and Kosovo with 18.

A total of 5,328 individual business meetings were arranged involving 585 Malaysian suppliers and exporters, and the buying mission achieved confirmed sales of RM185.3 million in two days.
