MAS Collaborates With INHART To Strengthen Halal Standards

PETALING JAYA, Nov 26 (Bernama) — Malaysia Airlines (MAS) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the International Institute for Halal Research and Training (INHART), a centre dedicated to halal industry set up by the International Islamic University Malaysia.

Under the MoU, MAS will accept students from INHART for internships at its halal catering operations while INHART will assist in providing safety and halal training, consultancy and syariah-compliance training to the airline.

MAS Customer Services Director, Datuk Mohd Salleh Ahmad Tabrani, said the MoU was one of MAS’ initiatives to formulate, implement and continuously update its halal standards.

“INHART will be developing relevant training modules for MAS beneficiaries and conduct training programmes in order to ensure compliance with the halal requirements by the caterers,” he told a media briefing after the signing of the MoU here Tuesday.

Also present was MAS Group Chief Executive Officer, Ahmad Jauhari Yahya.

MAS currently has two modules of halal training and with this MoU they would be further improved to enhance the offerings, said Mohd Salleh.

“We hope that this collaboration will serve as a platform to strengthen existing cooperation and implement activities that are of mutual interests to MAS and INHART-IIUM,” he said.

“At MAS, we see this as an opportunity to further enhance the travel experience of our Muslim passengers,” Mohd Salleh said.

Fifteen caterers engaged by MAS operate a 100 per cent halal kitchen and another 29 caterers are currently operating from partially-halal kitchens.

In all partial-halal kitchens the food production is totally separated between halal and non-halal products hence providing MAS with a completely halal plate each time.

This is also supported by the constant quality assurance audit conducted by an experienced team from the In Flight Operation QA, Safety and Halal unit under Service and Quality Assurance Department.

Both MAS and INHART believe that this two-year collaboration will bring about the enhancement of the MAS Halal Manual and Standard Operating Procedure while providing INHART students a valuable practical experience.
