KUALA LUMPUR, April 28 (Bernama) — The halal hub Malaysia aims to develop is different and far more comprehensive than those claimed by many countries, says a senior official of the Halal Industry Development Corporation (HDC).

Malaysia wants to be more than just a hub as its intention is to develop a halal eco-system and halal economy, said Wan Salman Sulaiman, senior manager of the Industry Development Division of the HDC.

HDC, established in 2006 and owned by the Finance Ministry, provides support to businessesmen who wish to participate in the global Halal industry, by enabling businesses to access new markets, he said.

This will help grow the Halal industry and benefit the nation’s economy, he said when speaking at the Malaysian Franchise Association breakfast talk on “Halal Business and Franchising: Understand, Practise and Expansion” today.

In 2005, the value of the global halal market was about US$2.1 trillion and of that, 67 per cent are catergorised as fast-moving consumer goods.

In the fast-moving consumer goods category, about 62 per cent are in the meat and food sectors, he said.

As for Malaysia, it exported RM17.9 billion worth of halal food products, while imports amounted to RM28 billion in 2008, he said.

He said there was immense potential for halal products in Asean and Gulf Cooperation Council member countries.

He urged the business community to enlist services of the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) to certify halal products and services as this would benefit them to gain access to the domestic and global halal markets.

“The government wants to see as many products and services as possible in Malaysia to be halal-certified to spur economic growth,” he added.
