KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 7 (Bernama) — All government agencies have been urged to hold functions, including the Aidilfitri celebration at food premises which have been certified halal (permissible in Islam).

Political Secretary to Prime Minister Datuk Jailani Ngah said Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak viewed seriously on the halal status of food premises where official functions were held.

“Inspections being carried out on food premises and restaurants of late showed the government’s concern over the halal issue as many premises had fluted the rule,” he told reporters after joining surprise checks of two food premises in Jalan Pudu Ulu, Cheras here Tuesday.

Fifteen officers from the Islamic Development Department, the Federal Territory Islamic Religious Department and the Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism Ministry took part in the checks.

Jakim Halal Hub Monitoring and Enforcement Division director Mohd Amri Abdullah said in the first raid, a Chinese Muslim restaurant at a hotel was found to have used Jakim’s halal logo without permission while its halal certification was still being processed.

The ministry’s Kuala Lumpur branch enforcement chief Othman Nawang said the restaurant violated Section 31B and Section 15 of the Trade Descriptions Act 1972.

In the second raid, a Thai restaurant was given a warning for using a fake halal logo.
