KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 12 (Bernama) — The Islamic Development Department (Jakim) has notified 34 foreign missions here on a list of 22 hotels in the capital which have been certified halal.
Its director-general, Datuk Wan Mohamad Sheikh Abdul Aziz said the embassies and high commissions were also informed that halal certification came under the jurisdiction of Jakim and state religious departments.
He said a circular on the notification, which was sent yesterday, would enable foreign missions to select halal hotels when hosting the breaking of Ramadan fast.
Twenty-two hotels and 51 kitchen in the capital have been certified halal by Jakim until Aug 9, he said in a statement.
He said the public could also get the list of hotels from Jakim and state religious departments.
In KUANTAN, the Pahang Islamic Religious Department (JAIP) has not issued any halal certificate to any kopitiam in the state.
Its deputy director, Datuk Ghazali Abdul Aziz said restaurants could not be certified halal (permissible in Islam) if the status of the material supplied was questionable.
“Many kopitiam operators applied for halal certification but they ignored many rules.
“The problem largely rested on food suppliers as kopitiam operators are not sure whether the raw material, e.g. chicken supplied have been certified halal or not,” he told reporters after opening a seminar on Ramadan and launching the Al-Quran and Sunnah Understanding and Development Institute here today.
Ghazali said food suppliers should first obtain halal logos from Jaip and the Islamic Development Department (Jakim) to enable kopitiam to be certified halal.
Ghazali said so far 90 per cent of hotels in Pahang were certified halal.
