DP World, the world’s fourth-largest container terminal operator, said on Wednesday that it welcomed Malaysia’s MISC Berhad as a new customer to its brand new Saigon Premier Container Terminal (SPCT) in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

MISC is adding two weekly calls to SPCT, with the maiden call of Bunga Teratai Empat, a 1,725 TEU (twenty foot equivalent container units) vessel, set for January 29, the Nasdaq Dubai-listed firm, majority owned by Dubai World subsidiary Ports & Free Zone World, said in a statement.

“I am delighted to welcome this new service of MISC for Intra-Asia, especially for the direct Japan market,” Patrick Bol, General Director of SPCT said. “We are working with carriers and importers/exporters to build awareness and trust in SPCT as the Port of Choice, providing quality services for our customers and a highly efficient, modern gateway for this region.”

The addition of MISC, subsidiary of Malaysian oil major PETRONAS, will bring the total carriers, so far, calling weekly at the SPCT facility to five. The other carriers currently calling are CMA-CGM, Gemadept, MCC and ZIM, said DP World which operates a total of 50 terminals across the world and handled 43.4 million TEUs last year. The new service, Malaysia East Asia Service (MES), consists of five vessels, complements MISC’s current Halal Express Service (HE1 and HE2), and serves the growing demand for the carriage of cargoes within the Intra-Asia region. With the new loop, MISC offers the fastest transit from Japan, China and Taiwan to Ho Chi Minh City and Jakarta. It is focused on refrigerated container transport, with capacity for a minimum of 200 refrigerated containers per vessel.

This service will also offer a direct call from Ho Chi Minh City back to Yokohama, Nagoya, Shanghai and Kaohsiung. In addition, MES will connect Jakarta and Ho Chi Minh City to other MISC services plying to Middle East, India Subcontinent, Australia and New Zealand at Singapore and Tanjung Pelepas. A total of 5 x 1,200-1,700 TEU vessels equipped with a minimum of 200 plugs per vessel are allocated for the new service.

Kuala Lumpur-listed MISC has a modern, diversified fleet of more than 100 vessels and operates in over 40 countries around the world. It is the world’s largest single owner-operator of Liquefied Natural Gas, or LNG, carriers and the world’s second largest owner-operator of Aframax tankers. SPTC, the DP World-operated container terminal, which is located along the western shore of the Soai Rap River on 23 hectares in the Hiep Phuoc Industrial Park, is a state of-the-art facility which began operations in October 2009.
