TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: Indonesia Chamber of Commerce threatened to file a judicial review over the drafted regulation of halal certification as the regulation was deemed of posing negative impact on business.
Vice Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce for Fiscal, Monetary, and Public Policy Haryadi Sukamdani said on Tuesday “if the Halal Products Guarantee bill is passed we are filing a case with the Constitution Court. Based on our review the bill will harm business. We are not complaining the sharia (Islamic law), but we are concern about the economic interests.”
The bill requires halal certification for food, drinks, medicines, cosmetics, and genetically modified crops. The chamber of commerce identified 23 problems in the bill with the most crucial one found in section 18 in which voluntary halal label has been changed to mandatory.
If the bill is approved the chamber of commerce said about 23,600 types of product from 1,096 companies should be retrieved from the market to undergo audit, verification, and halal certification.
