Halal Industry Can Move From Niche Market To Mass Worldwide Appeal

KUALA LUMPUR, June 21 (Bernama) — The halal industry can move from a niche market to gain worldwide appeal, as its values are based on integrity, quality and wholesomeness, KasehDia Sdn Bhd and World Halal Forum, Founder and Managing Director Jumaatun Azmi said.

To make this happen, she said the industry must possess excellent companies who have swam against the tide to placard a brand that is recognised not just by the industry, but by mainstream economies.

“With sustained effort, we will be able to move from being regional brands to multinationals,” she said at the 5th Halal Journal Awards held in conjunction with the World Halal Forum here Monday night.

Jumaatun said market players must be motivated by the fact that what they are selling is not just products and services but also a way of life based on values that are wholesome and beneficial to all.

The Halal Journal Awards 2010 paid tribute to seven companies and individuals from around the world for their outstanding initiatives in seven categories.

Former Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi presented the awards.

Malaysia’s Datuk Siti Nurhaliza took home the Best Product Award for SimplySiti, a halal beauty and skincare range, using the latest technology for skincare.

The award for Best Islamic Financial Service or Product went to FORAS International Investment of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Colgate-Palmolive (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd won the Best Community & Environmental Development award.

The award for Best Service Provider went to Al-Jazeera English while this year’s Best Innovation award was won by ImHalal.com, founded by Iranian-Kuwaiti brothers based in the Netherlands.

Meanwhile, the award that recognises Outstanding Personal Achievement went to Dr Naif Al-Mutawa, a Kuwaiti clinical psychologist and creator of “The 99”, the first group of comic superheroes born of an Islamic archetype, as Muslims believe power is ultimately God and God has 99 key attributes.
