Demand For Halal Meat Grows In Prince Edward Island

The demand for halal meat in the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island (PEI) is growing parallel to the rise in its Muslim population. The sole halal store is having a hard time meeting the growing demand, reports the CBC. PEI is Canada’s smallest province  located in Gulf of Saint Lawrence. In 2009 it had a population of 141,000. In the same year 250 Muslims were identified. Their population has reportedly been increasing due to influx of new immigrants and refugees.

Some grocery stores on the Island regularly carry lamb, chicken, weiners and processed halal food, but none is yet carrying beef.

MacQuarries Meat in Winsloe, north of Charlottetown, has been helping the Muslim community get halal beef for years. Every five weeks the society buys an animal at auction, arranges the slaughter, and even delivers the meat.

“Especially refugees, they don’t have cars, so we usually try to provide them this service. We have some volunteers just go over there, pick it up and deliver it to their houses,” said Chishti.

Rhonda Victor, manager of the Walker Drive Co-op in Charlottetown, said she sells around 40 halal chickens a week, but she can’t carry beef. “We do not have a big enough freezer to facilitate extra beef products, or extra products of any kind,” said Victor.

“I would love to be able to help them out, I really, really would, because you can see the growing number of Muslims that are coming into the stores.” She hopes to add a larger freezer by the end of the year.
