KUALA LUMPUR: The term halal not only has a religious connotation but is also a point of reference for quality, said Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.
The Prime Minister’s wife said that a product bearing the halal logo is now widely recognised for its assurance of quality, health and safety.
“There is worldwide acceptance of the Malaysian halal logo as we have the longest-established systems in halal certification,” she said at the closing ceremony of the World Halal Research Summit 2010 here yesterday.
Also present at the ceremony were Halal Industry Development Corporation’s chairman Tan Sri Dr Syed Jalaludin Syed Salim, and its chief executive officer Datuk Seri Jamil Bidin.
Rosmah said that the halal ingredients sector remains untapped, adding that she hoped to see more players cater to the rise in “more conscious consumers.”
“The Government recognises the need for us to remain competitive in the halal market, and we hope to see Malaysia become the hub for research and development in halal innovation,” she said.
